The Norwegian Red Cross
Organisations based on volunteers are a very important part of the civil protection in Norway. Civil protection is coordinated by the Police, who call the Red Cross for help when natural or man made hazards occur. The Norwegian Red Cross is, with their more than 13 500 members in 320 local entities, by far the largest of these organisations in Norway.
The Red Cross entities are always prepared for potential disasters and are able to participate in search and rescue operations on a very short notice.
How does the organisation operate?
When hazards occur, The Red Cross help force can all receive the alert simultaneously. Consequently, they can arrive at the scene quickly with personnel, vehicles and equipment. Vehicles for transportation of personnel, ambulances, boats and snowmobiles are all at their disposal. During different events like conferences, sports events, shows and demonstrations, the Red Cross will supply personnel with competencies for first aid and other relevant knowledge. They are well prepared and will be able to take care of injured people when arriving at the scene.
When extraordinary situations occur, The Norwegian Red Cross is able to increase efforts by providing personnel before, during and after an incident. Even with regards to a crisis abroad, The Norwegian Red Cross has highly skilled delegates with international experience.
Customer needs
In 2002 the Akershus Røde Kors Hjelpekorps (a local entity) started evaluating alterative ways of alerting their personnel instead of the traditional chain calling. The criteria were to find a system where you could reach all available personnel in a very fast and reliable way. It should also be able to easily collect each person’s reply and give an instant overview to the manager of the operation.
Our solution
Akershus Røde Kors Hjelpekorps chose UMS Voice Broadcast Group Alert. Soon after implementation, The Norwegian Red Cross entered into an agreement with UMS for all departments of The Norwegian Red Cross – giving them a solution covering the entire organisation.
Today, UMS Voice Broadcast Group Alert is well implemented in the mobilization process for all units of the Norwegian Red Cross. It is being used for actions requiring personnel alerts.
